Once in the partition screen, click the Options button at the bottom, and then select GUID Partition Table, and click OK. To do that, with the drive still selected on the left, click the Partition button (if it's not there then you have the wrong entry for the drive selected on the left). If it shows GUID then you're good to go, otherwise you'll need to repartition it. Down at the bottom of the window it'll show what partition scheme is used for the drive. Click on the external drive in the source list on the left of disk utility (the first entry for it showing the drive size and type. When the drive arrives, attach it to your system and run Disk Utility (in applications/Utilities) once the drive has mounted. What you are hoping to do is certainly possible, but the external will need to be partitioned in the GUID scheme in order for it to be bootable with an Intel Mac, and by default, most Mac-ready externals will not be partitioned that way.
